Maskey to join residents protest over Andersonstown Barracks

30 August, 2007

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Paul Maskey will join local residents from the Andersonstown area in West Belfast at a protest organised to highlight opposition to the proposed plans for the former Andersonstown Barracks.

The protest is taking place today, Thursday 30th at 12.45; meeting at the entrance of the Gas Works on the Ormeau Road and handing in a petition to the Department of Social Development.

Speaking ahead of the protest Mr Maskey said:

"The approach of the Department for Social Development to use of the site of the former Andersonstown barracks has been the source of much recent criticism by local residents.

"Sinn Féin has consistently called for the site to be given to the local community for public use.

"Margaret Ritchie now needs to listen to local people, and also to politicians from across the spectrum including those for her own party, all of whom are telling her that she has to review the situation.

"There is overwhelming opposition among local residents to the proposals put forward by the private developer for this site. The Minister has the power to review her decision and to use her prerogative to gift-aid the land to the local community." ENDS
