Sinn Féin welcome U-turn on future of Castle Street

30 August, 2007

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA, Cllr Paul Maskey ahs welcomed the U-turn of Social Development Minster Margaret Ritchie on the future of the Greater Castle Street area after she finally announced plans to developed an integrated strategy for the area.

Paul Maskey and Cllr Fra McCann have been working with local traders to develop a strategic Master plan for the redevelopment of the area.

Commenting on the U-turn by the Social Development Minster, Mr Maskey said:

"Sinn Féin Fein have consistently argued for a strategic Master plan for the redevelopment of the Greater Castle Street area.

"This is the main thoroughfare joining West Belfast to the city centre yet for too many years it has been neglected and become run down.

"A piecemeal approach, minor investment in street 'furniture' is fine on one level but it falls well short of what is required for this busy area.

"Until now Margaret Ritchie and the department have refused to move so this U-turn is particularly welcome." ENDS
