Sinn Féin meets Private Landlords Association
Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson, Fra McCann MLA and colleague Rosie McCorley have met with the chairperson of the Private Landlords Association.
Speaking after the meeting Fra McCann said:
"This was a very productive meeting and wide range of issues which impact on the private rented sector including HMOs, mandatory registration, anti-social activity were discussed.
"Although we agreed to differ on many of these issues we have agreed to meet again in the future.
"We made it clear to the Chairperson that in any housing mix that Sinn Féin belive that a well regulated private housing sector can provide an essential part in the housing mix, but we stressed the need for mandatory registration and the weeding out of unscrupulous landlords who offer nothing to the housing market.
"There is also the need for a more proactive approach in dealing with anti social tenants and in addressing the issues of fair rents, and the over saturation of the private rental market in areas which impact on the long term fabric of communities.
"The discussion was wide ranging and whilst the chairperson did not agree with our analysis of the steps we believe are needed to deal with this, there is now a basis on which discuss these key issues further." ENDS
