Mc Kay MLA welcomes Translink announcement

3 September, 2007

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has welcomed the announcement from Translink that three-for-two seat sharing is to be brought to an end on school buses in the north.

Mr McKay said:

"The announcement that three-for-two seat sharing is to be brought to an end on our school buses is something that must be welcomed and something that parents have been calling for for some time, especially in the wake of the tragic deaths of five schoolchildren in a bus accident in Meath two years ago.

""Although the provision of seatbelts increases the safety of children, further issues such as over crowding also need to be addressed. Translink has said that they aim to now end the trend of children having to stand on school buses in line with Assembly recommendations and we hope to see significant improvements in this regard over the next year.
"The safety of children is of paramount importance and now that the Assembly has been restored the opportunity exists to further improve road-safety for schoolchildren who travel to school by bus, car or on foot."
