Renewable Energy Grants welcomed by Sinn Féin

3 September, 2007

Sinn Féin's Environmental Spokesperson and North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay has welcomed the launch of a new campaign by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment to promote renewable energy systems. DETI is providing 50% grants to promote systems for wind turbines and solar water heating in homes.

Mr McKay said:

"Ireland is one of the best placed countries in Europe to take advantage of renewable energy and it is vitally important that householders are given the opportunity to use renewable energy if we are to reduce our over-reliance on fossil fuels.

"The launch of this new campaign by DETI is to be welcomed but more still needs to be done to reduce the amount of harmful emissions produced by the use of fossil fuels. It is vitally important that the Department of the Environment now shows leadership on this issue and puts in place medium and long-term targets for emissions reductions in a Climate Change Bill which radically reduces our reliance on traditional fuels such as oil and gas."
