Bairbre de Brún calls for greater alcohol protection for young people

4 September, 2007

Sinn Féin's former Health Minister Bairbre de Brún has today stressed the need for greater protection for young people to prevent them from succumbing to alcohol abuse.

In a speech in the European Parliament on the alcohol related harm, the MEP focussed on young people and alcohol. She said:

"We certainly need a special focus on alcohol-related harm and young people, both children and young adults. We need more stringent monitoring of the laws on selling alcohol to underage children. We also need to address the issue of 'alcopops' and the use of special offers and other marketing devices designed to increase sales of alcoholic drinks among young people in particular.

"Is cinnte go bhfuil fócas speisialta de dhíth orainn maidir le dochar bainteach le halcól agus daoine óga, idir pháistí agus aosaigh óga. Tá monatóireacht níos géire de dhíth ar dhíol alcóil le páistí faoi aois. Caithfimid dul i ngleic le ceist na 'alcopops' agus le húsáid tairiscintí speisialta agus seifteanna eile margaíochta atá deartha chun díolachán deochanna meisciúla i measc daoine óga go háirithe a mhéadú.

"Much anti-social activity is due to alcohol abuse and ease of access to alcohol. Tackling alcohol abuse means protecting our young people and our whole community from the social ill-effects of alcohol abuse.

"Agus muid ag amharc ar dea-chleachtas i dtíortha eile an Aontais, is féidir beartais fhadtéarmacha níos fearr a chumadh le dul i ngleic le sciúirse a bhaineann le ró-thomhaltas alcóil. Is féidir comharthaí mí-úsáid alcóil a shonrú trí fhoréigean randamach sráide, trí mhí-úsáid teaghlaigh agus trí thimpistí ar ár mbóithre." ENDS
