de Brún welcomes milk-for-children initiative

5 September, 2007

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún today welcomed the adoption of the "mini-milk" package by the European Parliament. Among the measures adopted is a scheme to provide school children with milk across Europe. Ms de Brún also joined other MEPs in calling on the Commission to look at expanding the scheme to include things like fruit for school children.

Speaking in Strasbourg Ms de Brún commented

"The EU has approached this topic sensibly. The school milk distribution scheme will provide nutrition to children and also aid the dairy industry. I am delighted that the European Parliament has also made clear its wish to see the Commission explore other potential products which could be added to such a scheme. Obesity and poor diets have never been such a problem and any action the EU can take to tackle it should be welcome.

"As Minister for Health, and lead Minister for the Investing for Health strategy in the last power-sharing Executive, I oversaw the launch of a similar programme in the North as a pilot scheme which included fresh fruit for children. I am convinced that this could be very beneficial and look forward to the European Commission coming up with similar plans involving free fruit for schools." ENDS
