Ó Snodaigh welcomes Tallaght drugs seizures

7 September, 2007

Speaking after over €400,000 worth of cocaine, ecstasy and herbal cannabis were seized in Tallaght this morning Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD welcomed the seizure but called for extra resources for the Garda Drugs Units to combat the drugs crisis in Ireland.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said today, "While I welcome this morning significant drugs seizure in Tallaght, it is quite obvious, both by the amount of seizures taking place and by the amount of drugs getting through, that there is a need for extra resources for the Garda Drugs Units.

"Unlike the Government, Sinn Féin is acutely aware of the gravity of the drugs crisis in Ireland and the serious crime that comes with it. Recognising this, we have called for a doubling of the resources allocated to the Garda Drugs Units and we have demanded, in a submission to the Garda Policing Plan 2008, that the pursuit of major drug and gun criminals be the number one priority for the Gardaí in the coming year.

"We realise that a justice approach alone will not solve the drugs crisis and have called on the Government to fully resource and immediately implement all five strands of the National Drugs Strategy. It is essential however, that the Gardaí, as the front line in the battle against drugs, are fully resourced to successfully fight that battle." ENDS
