Local community shock at death of young Patrick Devlin

9 September, 2007

Sinn Féin Mid Ulster MP, deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MLA has said that local people are totalled shocked after the sudden death of 13-year old Patrick Devlin during a GAA training session in Ardboe, County Tyrone.

Mr McGuinness said:

"This is tragic loss and I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the entire family circle. I know that people across the local area and beyond are deeply shocked at this sudden death of a young boy with so much ahead of him.

"In recent days we have also witnessed the death of 10 year-old Patrick Breen, who also died during a GAA training session. There have been four young people who have died in similar circumstances in less than a week.

"Given these tragic events it is proper that we look closely at the health and safety of our young children participating in sports to see if there is more that can be done to help sporting organisations monitor the health of our young people and respond quickly if any problems emerge." ENDS
