West Belfast MP meets Carvill Group on Andersonstown Road site

10 September, 2007

West Belfast MP Gerry Adams today held a meeting with the Carvill Group who have been chosen by the Minister for Social Development as the preferred developer for the site of the old Andersonstown RUC barracks.

Mr. Adams was accompanied by MLA Paul Maskey.

Today's meeting with the Carvill group followed on from a meeting last week with the DSD Minister Margaret Ritchie.

Mr. Adams said:

"There is implacable opposition to the decision made by Margaret Ritchie earlier this summer to hand the old Andersonstown RUC barracks site over to a private developer.

"Sinn Féin made representation over a year and a half ago to the Department for this land to be gifted to the local community for social or public use.

"This approach had informed our successful efforts to have the former British Army/RUC sites at Fort Jericho, Henry Taggart and Springfield Road used in keeping with local needs. The Andersonstown Barracks site should be utilized in this way.

"I told the delegation from the Carvill group that this is our position.

"Sinn Féin believes that the Minister needs to change her decision. Following representation by Sinn Féin she has agreed to review all the papers relating to her original decision.

"Sinn Féin will continue to press for this iconic and historic site to be used for the public good and in the public interest." Críoch
