Causeway debate must remain focussed on possible privatisation of Centre

13 September, 2007

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said that the primary focus of the debate on the Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre must remain on the possible privatisation of this major source of public income, not the private developer's links to other political parties. Mr McKay was speaking after the developer concerned spoke further about his relationship with political parties.

Mr McKay said:

"Whatever the relationship is between this developer and other political parties I think that it is important to ensure that this debate remains focussed on the possible privatisation of the revenue from one of our greatest tourist resources.

"The Giants Causeway is a natural asset of the people of Ireland and any such revenue from it should go toward the public good as it has always done. If the privatisation does go ahead it will result in the loss of millions of pounds to the public purse. If leadership were forthcoming from Nigel Dodds he would move forward with the public proposal for a Visitors Centre and make it the success that it can be." ENDS
