Sinn Féin campaign in support of European 1Million4Disability Campaign
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún, party spokesperson on Disability Michelle O'Neill along with Belfast city councillors, members of Ógra Shinn Féin and party activists will hit the streets of Belfast City Centre tomorrow, Thursday 20th September, at 12 noon to gather signatures for the European 1Million4Disability Campaign.
Speaking today Ms de Brún said:
"The 1Million4Disability Campaign was launched in January by the European Disability Forum. The campaign is about getting the EU to introduce effective legislation to combat all forms of discrimination and guarantee full inclusion of the more than 50 million people in the EU who live with disabilities.
"The campaign objective is to collect 1 million signatures to present to the European Commission and President of the European Parliament on October 4th. However, the deadline is approaching and Ireland is short of its quota by 4,000 signatures.
"Sinn Féin have agreed with the campaign that we would support the campaign by organising a country wide signature collection drive.
"This campaign is very important for Ireland. On a daily basis across Ireland people living with disabilities live with inequality and face unacceptable barriers. This is a simple and practical way that everyone can play a role in ensuring the rights of people with disabilities are protected and promoted." ENDS
