Most successful Sinn Féin event at British Labour Party conference in 10 years

26 September, 2007

Sinn Féin South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey has said that the party's Fringe Event at the British Labour Party conference was the most successful event for 10 years.

He also congratulated the supporters within the British Labour movement who had backed Sinn Féin and the Irish Peace Process over the last 30 years and encouraged them to continue supporting the peace process and progress on crucial issues such as the transfer of Policing and Justice Powers.

The audience included trade union leaders, long time supporters of Sinn Fein and the Irish Peace Process, the Irish Ambassador and British Secretary of State.

Mr Maskey said:

"This was the most successful Sinn Fein event at a British Labour Party conference for 10 years.

"I am pleased that so many people have maintained their support including many who were prepared to speak out about the injustices here 10, 20 and 30 years ago.

"There has been a huge determination to see the peace process succeed.

"We are nearly a decade on from the Good Friday Agreement and we now have the political institutions back in place but we are focused on further bedding down that progress by seeing the transfer of Policing and Justice Powers next year and the participatory democratic structures such as the civic forum."
