Garda deployment and resource deficiencies hindering fight against serious crime – Ó Snodaigh

27 September, 2007

Responding to the Garda Inspectorate's latest report 'Policing in Ireland: Looking Forward' published yesterday Sinn Féin Dublin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh said last nights shooting in Inchicore highlights the urgent need for personnel redeployment proposals to be implemented.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:
"Last nights violent shooting in my own constituency of Inchicore is the third in this city in as many days.
"The recent escalation of gangland shootings is evidence that relevant elements of the Garda Inspectorate's recommendations are long over-due and must immediately be implemented.
"We are encouraged that many of Sinn Féin's proposals on the deployment of personnel in the party's submission to the Gardaí Policing Plan 2008 have been mirrored in the Inspectorates' recommendations.
"The Inspectorates' report concurs with Sinn Féin that in order to successfully tackle crime Gardaí must be much more visible in communities and that this must involve alterations to the current shift times in urban areas especially.
"Sinn Féin's key priority for the Policing Plan 2008 is to see more Gardaí on the beat patrolling residential areas with greater frequency and particularly during the hours when problematic and criminal behaviour occurs. We also called for an increased Garda presence in areas experiencing chronic problems of public drug dealing.
"The Inspectorate again highlights the low level of civilianisation in our police force relative to international standards.
"Sinn Fein called for the Policing Plan 2008 to progress a major process of civilianisation of appropriate administrative tasks and of much of the Garda Traffic corps so as to free up fully trained Gardaí to be re-deployed into much needed patrolling duties and ultimately to take on serious crime.
"We appreciate the ex-Boston Police Commissioner's recognition that the Irish people wish to see the force remain routinely unarmed and call on the government to make the necessary funding available to ensure that the very best ballistic protection technologies are available to Gardaí. We are also calling for the government to resource and roll-out the long promised secure communications system without further delay." CRÍOCH
