Mary Lou McDonald condemns Burmese military violence against protestors
Speaking ahead of today’s European Parliamentary Resolution on the escalating violence against peaceful protestors in Myanmar by the ruleing military Sinn Féin Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald has described the regimes actions as assault against democracy.
Ms McDonald said:
"Sinn Fein strongly condemns the oppressive regime of the ruling military junta who during their forty year rule have driven the Burmese economy into the ground and have held their own people hostage.
“Following the decision of the junta to hugely increase the price of fuel overnight in a country already on its economic knees citizens have taken to the streets in peaceful protests as is their democratic right.
“Yesterday when over 100,000 people led by thousands of Buddhist monks took to the streets of Myanmar in another mass peaceful action the military fired at and baton charged the crowd. It has been reported 3 monks and a civilian have been killed and hundreds badly injured.
“The international community and its institutions must use their democratic influence to ensure this oppressive regime end its current wave of violence against its own citizens.” CRíOCH
