Hassan condemns despicable Galliagh arson attack

29 September, 2007

Derry City Sinn Féin Councillor, Tony Hassan has condemned last nights arson attack in Galliagh which resulted in the loss of a vital community service's premises and a number of homes.

Councillor Hassan said:

"This act of wanton destruction has deprived the Greater Shantallow area of a vital community service. The focal point of the attack which also resulted in a neighbouring house completely destroyed and another severely damaged was the home of 'Good Morning North-West'. This is a service that provides daily contact between community services and the elderly. This despicable act was not just an attack on bricks and mortar, it was an attack on the fabric of our community.

"I sympathise with the homeowners who also suffered in this attack and would strongly appeal to anyone with information about this incident to come forward with it to the PSNI. I can understand the reluctance of some people to do so but it is the only way to ensure that those behind these attacks are unable to continue with their destruction until inevitably you or your neighbour is killed.

"I have no doubt that the great people of 'Good Morning North-West' will overcome this attack and continue to ensure that the elderly residents of Greater Shantallow do not suffer unduly because of the actions of a few mindless vandals who live in our community." ENDS
