Fostering Achievement initiative
Sinn Féin Newry Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan has welcomed the success of the Fostering Achievement initiative. The scheme aims to equip and support foster carers to help them let the children in their care realise their full potential. He was speaking after attending the recent presentation by "Fostering Achievement" at the Planetarium in Armagh.
He also said that it had shown very publicly the success of those involved in the scheme.
Mr Boylan said:
"Fostering Achievement had a target of helping 900 families last year and exceeded this by reaching 979 children throughout the Six Counties. Among the goods and services delivered there was 420 computers, 122 educational tuitions / aids, 22 special needs requirements, and 50 Driving Tuitions for young people."
The Sinn Féin elected representative said that he like those who attended now realised just what an important service this excellent group quietly delivered. He added:
"Presently funding has been secured and I believe that it is imperative for all local politicians to ensure this invaluable scheme is adequately funded at all times to ensure it can continue its good work.
"I was disappointed to learn that the Armagh - Dungannon area has the lowest uptake of Fostering Achievement in the North. It presently sits at around 12%, whereas it is much higher in other areas, for example Belfast has an uptake of round 70%. Hopefully this event has helped to raise awareness of the scheme locally."
