Shock at Derry jobs bombshell
New figures that reveal the massive extent of job losses in Derry prove the need for rapid investment in the city, Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has said.
Ms Anderson said:
"Statistics included in the North West Region Cross Border Group (NWRCBG) reveal that there have been 10, 471 redundancies in the region between 1998 and 2004.
"This is a truly an appalling figure and a damning indictment of the neglect endured by Derry and the wider North West region for many years.
"It is against that backdrop that Sinn Féin launched the 'Stand up for Derry' campaign and its statistics like these which demonstrate why just such a campaign is so necessary.
"In response to this revelation, I immediately submitted questions to the Finance Minister and the Minister for Employment and Learning asking them to detail what steps they are taking to address unemployment in Derry.
"I have also tabled an adjournment debate which will requires the minister to come into the chamber to answer directly to the MLA's on this issue and explain what they're doing about it.
"We will also be raising it through the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister and the North South Ministerial Council to examine how greater north-south economic co- can benefit the North West region.
"It's been said many times that the North is an economic basket case and figures like this only serve to prove the point.
"It's clear, therefore, that the only hope for securing a better future for us all is through greater north-south co-operation and the creation of a truly all-Ireland economy." ENDS
