Cullyhanna Commemoration hears of challenges to vision of Republic

18 November, 2007

Over one thousand people who attended the 34th anniversary commemoration of Michael McVerry in Cullyhanna heard Derry Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney state that many challenges lie before republicans but that as in the past, those challenges would be confronted.

Mr McCartney said:

"Confronting challenge has never deterred us in the past, nor will it in the future. We have the vision of the republic, we have the strategy to direct it and we have the leadership to drive it forward."

Raymond McCartney told those present that Michael McVerry displayed the qualities that were to become and still remain the watchwords for the south Armagh - courage, ingenuity, leadership and integrity.

Offering his sympathy to the family of Paul Quinn he reiterated his Party's call for anyone with information relating to the young mans death, to bring it to the Guards or the PSNI.

He also said that it was apparent to all that many opposed to the reunification of Ireland and those opposed to the current strategy of Sinn Fein both had seized upon the death of Paul Quinn to use it to rekindle a debate, - 'a debate they lost a long time ago'.

The Sinn Fein MLA concluded by calling on all present to remember all those who had fallen in the struggle for freedom in the best way possible, that was by delivering the Republic.
