SDLP lambasted over farming motion hypocrisy - Doherty MLA MP
Sinn Féin Vice President Pat Doherty MP MLA has today been co-opted on to the Assembly Agriculture Committee.
Speaking on a motion regarding payments provided to farmers who found themselves affected by the discovery of the hormone alpha-nortesterone in a number of cattle and resulting heavy handed raids on homes, as the party's new spokesperson on Agriculture Mr Doherty said,
"As soon as the Minister for Agriculture, Michelle Gildernew came into office she addressed this issue with gusto and positivity.
"Not only did she re-raise this issue, she also facilitated a meeting with senior departmental officials and the farming community.
"Good-will payments to farmers up to £80,000 were made by the Minister within two months of her taking office.
"A review of the incidents was instituted by the Minister and there was an immediate adoption of it's recommendations so that this would never happen again.
"PJ Bradley and the SDLP's hypocrisy on this issue is astonishing. They were notably quiet during the raids of farmers homes and notably quiet on raids on the Nationalist community over the past 40 years.
"This issue is too important to become a cheap political point scoring exercise by the SDLP." Deireadh/Ends
