Attacks on Fire Service wrong
Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has said whilst he welcomes the news that incidents involving attacks on the Fire Services have reduced it is worrying that there were 285 reported attacks in 2007.
Mr McCartney said:
"Whilst I welcome the news that incidents involving attacks on the Fire Service in the North have reduced it is worrying that there were 285 reported attacks in 2007. It is nothing sort of disgraceful that so many of these attacks are still taking place
"These acts are carried out by mindless people and serve no purpose what so ever and could have led to serious injury or indeed the loss of life. It is the support of the local community that is vital in putting the message out that these attacks are totally wrong and will only have a detrimental effect on any area.
"The people involved should be made aware of the potential consequences that these attacks could have. It is very possible that someone could lose their life if the Fire Service decides that it is unsafe for their members to enter any area, particularly at night time.
"On behalf of the local community I would like to take this opportunity to commend the Fire Service for the great work that they do. The men and women of the Fire Service are dedicated to saving life and property and must be in a position to carry out their work without the threat of attack.
"I would also call on all people, especially parents across the city to do what they can to both educate the young people involved in these attacks and to be vigilant to ensure that these attacks do not happen." ENDS
