Boylan asks Minister to look at Road Safety scheme for Immigrants

13 February, 2008

Sinn Féin Road Safety spokesperson, Newry Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan has asked the Environment Minister to consider looking at ways to aid Foreign nationals driving in the Six counties in the comprehension of our road rules.

Mr Boylan said:

'Many of the migrant workers driving on our roads are not bad drivers, but coming from their own countries and immediately starting to drive here, they have not had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with our 'rules of the road'.

"In terms of Road Safety, this is an issue which must be addressed. An innovative scheme was launched in Mayo last December called 'Safety through Knowledge' designed to educate foreign drivers about road safety. I feel this welcome initiative should not only be rolled out throughout the rest of the 26-counties, but also replicated in the North.

"I have asked the Minister, Arlene Foster, to give serious consideration to a similar scheme in the 6-counties, anything which can reduce fatalities on our roads needs to be looked at as positive, and this section of our communities is being ignored at present." ENDS
