Resignation of Ian Paisley Jnr - Transparency in public life must be defended

18 February, 2008

Sinn Fein North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay commenting on the resignation of fellow North Antrim MLA Ian Paisley Jnr from his position as a Junior Minister in the Office of the First and deputy First Minister has said that Paisley Jnr still has a number of questions to answer.

Mr McKay said:

"It is important that there is transparency in public life. This must be defended. Any suggestions that they have acted in a way that falls below what should be expected only serves to undermine public confidence in the democratic institutions.

"This is certainly not the end of it for Ian Paisley Jnr. There are still a number of questions that he needs to answer in relation to the Giants Causeway and other developments.

"All MLA's have a responsibility to act in a way that is beyond reproach. Obviously Paisley Jnr has recognised that it is now time to resign from his position as a Junior Minister." ENDS
