Vandalism at Friends Meeting Hall a ‘despicable attack’
Newry and Armagh MP Conor Murphy has said that news of the painting of sectarian graffiti on the doors and walls of the Friends Meeting House (Quakers) at Derramore near Bessbrook was a despicable.
Mr Murphy said:
"I would condemn this attack wholeheartedly and without reservation and I have no doubt that it will be condemned by all right thinking people."
Local Councillor Pat McGinn who visited the Meeting House this morning said that he was deeply saddened and shocked at the scene.
Cllr McGinn said:
"There is a huge respect for the Religious Society of Friends, the Quakers, throughout this area and our communities. Truth, equality, peace and simplicity are the virtues that are important to them. I personally anytime whether privately or publicly that I have visited here have always been treated with respect and kindness.
"This is a vile attack and there is huge anger within the local community about it. Those who did this have no respect for themselves never mind their neighbours.
The Councillor confirmed that he was aware that recently windows had been broken at the Hall.
"There has been a history of anti-social behaviour in the nearby Derramore Lands, but this has taken a sinister twist" said the Councillor.
