Goldsmith proposals unlikely to find support

11 March, 2008

Sinn Féin Chief Whip Carál Ní Chuilín has said that the Goldsmith Report proposals on 'British' citizenship and suggestions that school-leavers are to be encouraged to swear an oath of allegiance to the British Queen would find little support among Irish nationalists and Republicans living in this part of Ireland.

Ms Ní Chuilín said:

"This myopic view of citizenship offers little in terms of equipping any young person with a sense of civic or social responsibility or little in terms of building a sense of worth.

"These proposals are a non starter in this part of Ireland and it is hard to imagine any enthusiasm among Irish nationalists and Republicans for this type of tub thumping." ENDS
