Sinn Féin response to Leslie Cubitt RPA & Flags rant

21 March, 2008

Sinn Féin Cllr Paddy Butcher rejected Cllr Cubitt comments about the Review of Public administration "the rant of a political dinosaur".

Cllr Butcher said

"Cllr Cubitt looks back fondly to the days when local government here in Limavady was undermined by political and sectarian discrimination. The last shake up of local government was a direct response to the abuse of power by unionists. The new local government arrangements will deliver democratically accountable decision making and end discrimination and the politics of exclusion.

"Sinn Féin also look forward to Limavady joining with Moyle, Coleraine and Ballymoney. In three years time we will be arriving in Coleraine with a significant Nationalist and Republican presence to deliver effective opposition to the status quo and to smash the sectarian glass ceiling which has prevailed in Coleraine council for generation. For once in my life I agree with Leslie Cubitt when he said 'Roll on 2011'.

"As regards his comments on the tricolour being flown in Limavady. The tricolour is the national flag of Ireland. Traditionally nationalist and republican communities only fly the flag on a limited number of days in the year such as Easter and then remove them afterwards. This will be done in Limavady and elsewhere once the commemorations are over.

"I would challenge Cllr Cubitt to use his influence within the PUL community on Edenmore Road to follow our example. The flying of union flags 365 days of the year is a disgrace to their own tradition and an eyesore to the residents of the town." ENDS
