Investment in upskilling and retraining of workforce required – Morgan
Sinn Féin Economic Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has called on the Government to invest in the upskilling and retraining of our workforce with a particular focus on the research and development sector. Speaking in the Dáil today Deputy Morgan criticised the Government for its failure to prepare for the slowdown in the economy even though all economic indicators pointed to such an inevitability.
He said, "The Government failed to identify in advance of and prepare for the slowdown in the economy even though all economic indicators pointed to it happening. This is leading to increased unemployment with the highest number of people on the live register since 1999.
"There has been an increase by 12,000 in this month's live register figures with a sustained loss of jobs in vulnerable sectors like the construction industry. Many of these workers have no other experience other than in construction and will need to be uskilled and retrained to suit new emerging industries.
"There is an urgent need for investment in upskilling and retraining of our workforce, in particular to target the research and development sector.
"The Government must also accept that its policy of cutting PRSI contributions was wrong, based now on the growing demand on the Social Insurance Fund." ENDS
