Mary Lou McDonald challenges EU Parliament President on attempts to suppress information from Irish electorate
Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald speaking in the EU Parliament this afternoon challenged Hans-Gert Pöttering (President of the European Parliament) on attempts by senior figures within the EU Commission and Parliament to suppress information from the Irish electorate in advance of the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.
Ms. McDonald said:
"There is growing disquiet in Ireland at ongoing revelations that senior figures within the EU Commission and EU Parliament are attempting to suppress information from the Irish electorate in advance of the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Offers by Commissioners to tone down or delay decisions or letters to committees within the Parliament urging them not to deal with issues, which could be controversial in Ireland, are an affront to democracy.
"Irish people deserve the full and unvarnished truth about EU intentions regarding defence and security, budgetary matters or corporation tax. I have sought an urgent meeting with the President of the European Parliament to discuss these issues and to try and bring an end to this type of underhand behaviour." ENDS
