Council ignores agency workers’ rights – Leonard

23 May, 2008

Sinn Féin councillor Billy Leonard has branded unionist councillors as "very short-sighted" in opposing a motion on improving agency workers' rights.

The motion was proposed at last week's Council meeting by Leonard who said:

"The motion was about Council getting behind the plight of Agency workers who do not get anywhere near the same rights as permanent workers.

"We know that an increasing number of people, both indigenous and migrant, are employed by Recruitment Agencies. Unions and others have been campaigning for an improvement in the way they are treated.

"For the unionists on Council to hide behind smoke-screen reasons for not supporting the motion meant that they lost an opportunity to support the ordinary person.

"They need to sort out in their heads that a motion submitted by Sinn Féin has still got value. Councillor McClarty raised a red herring excuse for not supporting it just as he did on a previous occasion.

"It is time maturity levels were raised in Coleraine Council." ENDS
