Social economy has crucial role in economic success and tackling disadvantage

10 June, 2008

West Belfast Sinn Féin MLA and Deputy Chair of Enterprise, Trade & Investment Committee Jennifer McCann welcomed today's Social Enterprise Event at St Georges Market in Belfast.

Ms McCann said:

"This event provides a platform for a number of projects from the Social Economy Sector to show case their success.

"The social economy has a crucial role to play in growing a dynamic economy and regenerating disadvantaged communities.

"The sector provides much needed frontline services particularly in areas of social and economic disadvantage and creates employment opportunities for people who have been economically inactive for a long time.

"The recent guidelines for public procurement procedures identify equality of opportunity as one of its objectives. There is an opportunity for the Executive to deliver on their key priorities of tackling poverty and social disadvantage by ensuring businesses from the social economy sector are considered for tenders of public services.

"It is essential that the social economy is recognised for its contribution to establishing a thriving economy and I would urge the new minister of Enterprise, Trade and Investment to ensure it is given the support it needs to develop and grow." ENDS
