Ó Snodaigh welcomes Dublin heroin seizure
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has welcomed the seizure of €4million worth of heroin in Dublin last night. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said heroin dealers need to remain a top target for Garda Drug Squads and funding for addiction services must not be cut in today's cutbacks.
He said, "The cocaine epidemic in this state and the media focus on it has allowed the heroin crisis to fester to record levels with little attention being paid to it. This has been evidenced by figures released yesterday which show that the number of heroin addicts seeking treatment has almost doubled to 10,000 in the last ten years.
"While the cocaine epidemic must remain a top priority for the Gardaí it is essential that the fight against heroin is not de-prioritised. Heroin dealers must remain a top target for Garda Drug Squads.
"Further to this funding for addiction services must not be cut in the cutbacks that are to be announced today. These services are extremely stretched already and are in need of extra funding. The HSE Dublin/Mid Leinster area has already enforced a 1% cut in funding for addiction services. This needs to be reversed." ENDS
