Anger at department's neglect of Ballycastle Health Centre

24 September, 2008

Sinn Féin North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay has said that the Minister for Health needs to respond to an increasing demand for GP facilities in rural areas.

Mr McKay was speaking after putting a number of priority questions to the Minister for Health regarding the need for a new Health Centre in Ballycastle.

Mr McKay said

"The Health Centre in Ballycastle, and those who work there provide an excellent service in this area and the Minister for Health must ensure that the facilities here match this.

"A business case has been submitted to the Department of Health for a new purpose built facility and I have put four priority questions to the Minister at the Assembly this week requesting a firm commitment from him that funding will be provided.

"The centre is in urgent need of a new purpose built facility. It has had no expansion structurally in 42 years. Anything other than a positive response from the Minister on this issue, given the department's failure to address this in the past, will be unacceptable." ENDS
