93 Job Losses in Craigavon‏

25 September, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA John O'Dowd has voiced his deep concern at the future stability of the NACCO Materials Company in Craigavon after management informed workers this morning that 93 jobs are to go at the plant, which is around a quarter of the existing workforce.

The company designs, engineers and manufactures fork lift trucks for virtually every market, including warehouse trucks, counterbalanced trucks and cargo and container handling trucks. The plant currently employs around 400 workers; around 120 temporary employees have already been laid off over this last several months.

Mr O' Dowd said:

"Earlier this month following speculation that there maybe job losses at the plant I called on the DETI Minister, Arlene Foster, to personally intervene to help prevent job losses. The Minister responded in a written Assembly answer (AQW 401/09) by stating;

"NACCO management contacted Invest NI on Friday, 12 September 2008, to confirm that no decisions have been taken with regard to future job levels and that they will be undertaking a thorough review of forward production for the first and second quarters of their new financial year; January - June 2009.

"In December 2008, on completion of this detailed assessment, staff at NACCO will be fully informed of the outcome and resulting decisions to be taken. This will be in advance of any public announcement."

Mr O'Dowd continued;

"However this morning workers were called to a meeting and told that nearly a quarter of the workforce, 93 workers, would be loosing their jobs which is contrary to the information given both to the Minister and Invest NI.

"I have contacted the Minister today asking if she is aware that NACCO announced to its workers this morning that there will be 93 job losses and if the Minister will ascertain as to why her department was given contrary information on the 12th of Sept in regards to NACCOs intention and time frame for any possible announcements.

"I have also urged the Minister to ensure Invest NI review its assistance to NACCO in light of the announcement of the 93 job losses to ensure all necessary assistance is given to the NACCO plant in Craigavon and given the nature of the announcement that all public money invested in the plant is protected."
