Taoiseach must reaffirm Ireland's commitment to Europe
Following this morning’s presentation by Microsoft Chief Paul Rellis to the Oireachtas Sub Committee on Ireland’s Future in Europe Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has called on the Taoiseach to clarify with its EU partners that Ireland’s place is firmly within Europe.
The Donegal Senator said:
During this afternoon’s presentation the Microsoft Chief acknowledged that whilst he had ‘not seen any material impact on jobs, market access or sales in recent months attributable to the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty’ an intervention by the Taoiseach would be helpful to clarify Ireland’s commitment to Europe.
“Mr. Rellis noted that an intervention by the Taoiseach would be helpful for the purposes of clarity on Ireland’s view of Europe noting ‘the mixed message received, rightly or wrongly, is that Ireland is not as pro-European Union as it was and is not as driven to be fully part of the Union as it used to be.’
“The government’s own post Lisbon research shows that the majority of people who voted against the Treaty believe that Ireland’s place is within Europe. The current uncertainty has arisen because the Irish government continues to fudge dealing with the post Lisbon political situation. Rather than voice the peoples mandate to their EU peers, call for the ratification process to cease and begin the process of a new deal negotiation government in its now well honed fashion is offering no leadership on the issue.” ENDS
