EU to investigate Sinn Féin petition on Coleraine dumps

27 October, 2008

Sinn Féin councillor Billy Leonard has received confirmation that the European Parliament will investigate his Petition concerning proposals for four waste management sites in the Ringsend area outside Coleraine in Co. Derry.

There are proposals for a super-dump serving seven councils and other private sites one of which has caused great controversy in the area and also resulted in a former owner being jailed: all are very close to one another.

Cllr Leonard lodged the petition on the basis that it was the only way of getting an investigation into the cumulative effect of all four proposals on the community in such a small area.

He said:

"I have just received this confirmation and now the EU will set in motion their detailed preliminary investigation into the effect of all these proposals on the community. This is a very welcome development and I have already begun work with our European Parliament staff to monitor and contribute to the process.

"I know that many members of the community have been interested in this approach so I will obviously work with the local residents' committee and the community in general as we will have to update the EU investigation staff on developments since I lodged the petition. I would anticipate a meeting with our MEP Bairbre de Brún as one of many sensible ways forward.

"We have to keep up the pressure on all fronts and I sincerely hope that this particular development now opens up another front for the community." ENDS
