de Brún to meet with Women’s Sector lobby in Brussels
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún will be meeting with Norma Shearer, Chief Executive of Training for Women Network and three other leading representatives from the north's women's sector in Brussels this Thursday.
The women's sector representatives will be discussing key issues affecting the delivery of EU funded projects, including problems in attaining necessary statutory match funding for projects which have been approved by the European Social Fund as well as the roll out and delivery of PEACE III.
Speaking ahead of the meeting Ms de Brún said:
"I am looking forward to meeting with Norma Shearer and the delegation which will be in Brussels this week representing the women's sector in the North of Ireland and I am delighted that they are having an opportunity to raise their very real concerns with officials from Commissioner for Regional Development, Danuta Huebner's cabinet regarding problems they are encountering with attaining necessary statutory match funding for European Social Fund projects as well as how the delays in implementing the PEACE III programme are ensuring gaps in funding that are in turn negatively affecting projects aimed at advancing the role of women in our society.
"These are key issues that are affecting the delivery of projects in the women's sector in the north of Ireland. Our meeting will focus on how best to push forward on equality for women. There is still massive disparity in equality for women in a range of fields, including pay, work opportunities, pensions and promotion.
"Bearing in mind the great contribution women bring to the development of society it is incumbent on all government departments, statutory agencies and policy makers to ensure that all possible mechanisms for advancing gender equality are used rigorously. An Ireland of equals can only be achieved in the context of full equality for women."
