Concern at impending housing crisis in Enniskillen
Sinn Féin Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew has expressed alarm at what she described as “an impending housing crisis” in Enniskillen town.
The MP, having tabled a question in the Assembly asking for the exact number on the waiting list for Housing Executive housing, said she was shocked to learn that the number stood at 435 as of December ’08.
Commenting on the figures, Ms Gildernew stated
“When one thinks of a small town like Enniskillen where 435 people are waiting for a house, the scale of this problem becomes quite apparent”.
The pressure on social housing has been high in Enniskillen for some years, the MP explained, but given the recent serious downturn in the economy the urgent need for housing has increased.
“We need to address this as a matter of urgency. Clearly the provision of social housing is a question of long term policy planning, and that we have arrived in this position is an indictment of the years of neglect around this issue.”
I intend to raise this matter with the Minister Margaret Ritchie as a matter of urgency.” CRÍOCH
