MEPs have crucial role in maximising EU opportunities - de Brún
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún speaking after meeting with Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness and the two Junior Ministers in Brussels today to discuss the Executive’s Action Plan outlining its priorities for future European policy and funding has said that MEPs have a crucial role in maximising the opportunities for funding from Europe.
Commenting on the Executive’s response to the European Union Task Force report and the meetings of the Executive Ministers delegation with Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, and European Parliament President Hans Gert Poettering, Sinn Féin MEP for the Six Counties Bairbre de Brún said:
“The willingness in Europe to provide financial support for economic development will benefit from a joined up approach between the Executive, the Assembly and our local MEPs.
“The EU Task Force report identified a number of key areas where EU funds and programmes could make a difference. I welcome the Executive’s response and recognition that Europe could play a key role in the expansion our of transport infrastructure through the TENS (Trans European Networks) programme, in lifelong learning, in the environment and also in the establishment in the North of a conflict resolution centre.
“The Executive has now presented its Action Plan outlining its priorities for future European policy and funding and I will be working to ensure we can use the resources available from Europe to create and sustain jobs, to protect and promote the environment and advance the all Ireland agenda. MEPs have a crucial role in maximising the opportunities for funding from Europe.
“I will also continue to work with colleagues in the Executive to maximise the potential of the EU response to the economic downturn and its environmental programmes to make a significant contribution to our economy. Junior Ministers Gerry Kelly and Jeffrey Donaldson have a particular responsibility for moving forward the EU Task Force agenda and I look forward to engaging regularly with them in Brussels and at home.”
