Sinn Féin welcomes prompt response on Credit Union report

23 April, 2009 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and member of the Enterprise, Trade and Investment Jennifer McCann has welcomed the prompt response by the Enterprise, Trade and Iinvestment Minister, Arlene Foster, to the Inquiry into the Role an Potential of Credit Unions report.

Speaking today Ms McCann said:

"The Committee for Enterprise, Trade & Investment have been conducting an inquiry into the powers of Credit Unions in the North and I welcome the quick and positive  response to this report by the Minister.

“Credit Unions don't have the same range of powers that their counterparts in the South of Ireland or Britain have under current conditions and Sinn Féin has consistently called for this to be changed to allow Credit Unions here to expand their services.

“We need to assist our Credit Unions to offer key financial services and provide practical options to allow people borrow, save and manage their money at an affordable rate, particularly in the present adverse financial conditions and this is a step further towards achieving this.”
