Ferris welcomes commitment to lower gas prices

18 February, 2009

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Energy Martin Ferris TD has welcomed the announcement by Bord Gáis that the price charged to consumers will fall by 25% over the coming year.

Deputy Ferris said: "A 25% cut in gas prices would reflect the global trend in prices and would bring considerable relief to many consumers who are finding it difficult to pay bills, particularly in the current economic climate. It will also help to address the growing problem of fuel poverty.

"I will defer judgment on Bord Gáis intervention in the electricity market given that it is effectively two public agencies in competition. It would be preferable if the Energy Regulator was to allow the ESB to lower its prices to reflect the similar global trends which will be reflected in falling gas prices." ENDS
