Joint Business Council statement shows realisation of the benefits of all Ireland single economy approach

6 July, 2009 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast and deputy chair of the Enterprise, Trade and Investment committee has stated that today’s comment from the Joint Business Committee points towards a clear realisation that a single island economy is the best model for Ireland.

Speaking today Ms McCann said:

“Today’s statement by the Joint Business Committee is sending a very clear message. There is the need for a focused approach on building an all Ireland single economy as the best way for forward for economic regeneration.

“The simple fact is that the cost of division is economic hardship, stagnation and wasteful spending on duplication of services. Given the current global economic crisis to have two health services, two education services, two currencies and so forth on an island of 5 million people is not practical.

“Continuous fluctuation between the two economies is of no strategic benefit to anyone. What we should now be doing is examining ways of cross border co-operation and the establishment of an all Ireland focused economy.

“This is clearly the best model for Irelands development. Arlene Foster, as the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment should now seek a meeting with the JBC in order to expand on this proposal.

"The only way to truly transform the economy across the island of Ireland is to set it in the context of an island-wide strategy for development and regeneration. This means the harmonisation of key taxation policies, pricing, services, and entitlements along with the expansion of cross border co-operation."
