Fisheries Ministers meet in Portavogie

Fisheries Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA and Defra Fisheries Minister Huw Irranca-Davies met the local fishing industry in Portavogie recently to discuss concerns and priorities ahead of this December’s vital Fisheries Council in Brussels.

First stop was a tour of Parkgate Foods scampi processing facility hosted by Senior Manager Michael Beckett. The Ministers then held discussions with representatives of the fish catching and processing sectors.

Afterwards Minister Gildernew said: “Huw Irranca-Davies’s visit to Portavogie is very important to local fishermen, it provides confidence that their concerns are taken on board in Britain as well as in Ireland. I look forward to working closely with him in the weeks and months ahead to ensure that fishing opportunities in the Irish Sea are high on the list of priorities when we go to Brussels this December.

“Our main concerns are maintaining prawn quotas and persuading the Commission to consider the full economic impact of the new cod recovery plan. We were reminded of the dependence of the industry on prawns and the need to maintain this opportunity and improve market returns.”
