De Brún – “Fresh Must Mean Fresh”

6 September, 2009 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brun has said that we must see an end to the practice where chicken is reared, processed in Thailand and then is frozen and shipped to the EU defrosted and sold as ‘fresh poultry’. She has welcomed the proposal coming before the September Council of Ministers in Brussels tomorrow (Monday 7th September) which will end this practice.

Ms de Brun said, “Real consumer choice is impossible if consumers in Ireland and through-out the EU can be given such misleading information. Fresh poultry must mean fresh. We cannot stand over a situation where chicken reared and processed in Thailand is frozen then thawed inside the EU and is sold as fresh poultry. This is something that our poultry industry has been angry about for sometime.”

Ms de Brun continued, “I therefore welcome the proposal tomorrow to end this practice and fully expect member states to vote for it. However although most of Europe seems in favour of ending this ridiculous situation and it should go through, it is my information that, inexplicably, the British Government intends to vote against it. The British position is baffling and is not in the interests of consumers in the EU. The EU must take action to end this practice in order to ensure real consumer choice is assisted. ENDS
