Durkan and Robinson now singing from same hymn-sheet on GFA
‘Durkan and Robinson now singing from same hymn-sheet on GFA’ – Martina Anderson MLA
Sinn Féin Equality Spokesperson, Martina anderson MLA (Foyle) has commented that Mark Durkan and Peter Robinson are now singing from the same hymn-sheet with regards to their position to power-sharing as defined by the Good Friday Agreement (GFA).
Martina Anderson said:
“This week’s attack by Peter Robinson on the fundamental protections of the GFA echo those of Mark Durkan at Oxford last year when he called for the 'dismantling of the ugly scaffolding of the GFA'. The scaffolding he refered to are the inbuilt safeguards that ensure equality in the political institutions.
“On that occasion, Mark called for the abandonment of a system of government which, while not perfect, provides guarantees to the republican and nationalist community that majority unionist rule and all the abuses of power that went with it would never return.
“At that time Sinn Féin made it clear to Mark Durkan that there would be no return to unionist majority misrule and we are making it equally clear to Peter Robinson now.
“The SDLP and the DUP may want to create the conditions where they can cobble together an unholy alliance to frustrate Sinn Féin's determination to build an Ireland of Equals, but that will not be allowed to happen.
“The European election result showed that Sinn Féin are now the biggest party in the North in terms of first preference votes.
“This fact may not sit comfortably with either the SDLP or DUP but it’s a reality that they’re going to have to get used to.
“They can try and artificially engineer situations to attack Sinn Féin but they will not be allowed to undermine the democratic will of the people.”
