Sinn Féin welcome electricity price reductions
Sinn Féin MLA and vice chair of the Assembly Committee for
Enterprise Trade & Investment, Paul Butler, has welcomed the news that electricity
prices are set to come down.
Speaking today Mr Butler said:
"I welcome the news that electricity prices are set to come down. Sinn Féin met with NIE and the Utility Regulator on a number of occasions and put our concerns of the high price of energy to them both and the effect that this was having on consumers.
“Late last year NIE increased its domestic electricity prices by a massive 33.3%. That placed consumers under immense pressure to make ends meet.
“Since then tariffs have been cut by 10%, and now we see a further 5% reduction with this latest announcement which is to be welcomed. However the simple maths are that prices are still hanging around and all time high and we need to see further price reductions in the near future.
“Schemes like the Single Energy Market should encourage further reductions but there is an on onus on NIE and the Utility Regulator to protect the interests of customers and pass any future savings directly and quickly on to them.”
