Dublin Councillor calls for seized drug monies to be redirected into local communities

6 October, 2009

Speaking after a meeting with the Junior Minister with responsibility for drugs John Curran today, Dublin Sinn Féin Councillor Seamus McGrattan, a member of the Cabra/Finglas Drugs Task Force, called on the Minister to ensure that money seized from drug dealers is re-directed into the communities where the dealers have been most active.

Councillor McGrattan, while welcoming the new National Drugs Strategy, questioned the Government’s commitment to it pointing to proposed cuts of €2.6million from the strategy.

He said, “The extension of the National Drugs Strategy to include alcohol is a welcome development. However I would question the Government’s commitment to this strategy given its proposal to cut €2.6million of its funding. There is no point extending the scope of the strategy while at the same time cutting it’s funding, particularly at a time when Drugs Task Forces are already stretched to capacity.

“Today I asked the Minister to ensure that all monies seized from drug dealers is re-directed directly into the communities in which the drug dealers are most active. This would mean that all monies seized from drug dealers in the Cabra area would be re-directed into this community. While the Minister’s response was long winded he did say that this was the intention.” ENDS
