TUV show true colours demeaning the Irish Language community.
Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff has stated that the TUV, in calling Irish a leprechaun language and stating that it was dead, is a shallow attempt to demean those who speak a rich and vibrant language and to grab a headline.
Speaking today Mr McElduff said:
“The TUV in calling An Ghaeilge a leprechaun language is a shallow attempt to demean those who speak a rich and vibrant language.
“The TUV neither respect the rights and entitlements of Irish language speakers nor do they recognise the basic principle of respect. In an attempt to grab a headline they have showed their ignorance and blatant disregard for those who use the Irish language on a daily basis.
“By terming An Ghaeilge a dead language they ignore the fact that Irish is the fasted growing area within the education sector and more adults are choosing to learn the language at night classes, in universities and countless other fora.
“The TUV are clearly part and parcel of the outdated cultural colonialism that tried to eradicate the use of Irish. This policy didn’t succeed before and certainly won’t now.
“I wouldn’t even call for an apology for this insult as we know all too well that the TUV would delight in this becoming an issue. “
