DSD still refusing to engage on Andersonstown Barracks site - Maskey

5 November, 2009

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Paul Maskey has expressed dissatisfaction about the announcement from DSD Minister Margaret Ritchie of a competition for the site of the former Andersonstown RUC barracks :

“For the last four years, DSD has consistently refused to effectively engage and consult with the local community on the future use of the barracks site.”

“What’s at stake here is a piece of important public land; the use of public money; and the benefit to the public from proposals for this site in the future. Therefore for the Minster and this Department to refuse to engage the public, and public representatives, in the decision-making about these matters is fundamentally undemocratic.”

“This week, Sinn Féin completed a canvass of local residents in the area around the barracks site. Among the responses are more good ideas for the future of this site.”

“Sinn Féin will be holding a public meeting on Monday 16th November in the Glenowen Inn about this issue to ask local residents how they want to see the barracks site used in the future.” CRÍOCH
