Ó Snodaigh welcomes extension of privilege to Oireachtas Committee witnesses

20 May, 2010 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh has welcomed the new provision to extend Parliamentary privilege to witnesses appearing at Oireachtas Committees. Speaking today Deputy Ó Snodaigh said the move will enhance the potential of Oireachtas Committees to investigate issues of public importance.

He said:

“The move is welcome. It enhances the potential role of Committees in terms of investigating issues of public importance. It will enable the public to get to the truth on important issues and scandals via their elected representatives without having to rely on costly and lengthy tribunals.

“There is also a possibility that the Committees will have to be given the power to compel witnesses to attend and this could not be done in the absence of privilege protections for those witnesses.

“There will be a need for the Committee chairs to be up-skilled so that they can properly direct witnesses.” ENDS
