‘Additional funds for sex abuse councelling secured’ - Anderson

20 May, 2010 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has a welcomed a decision to provide additional funding to local sexual abuse councelling and support group, the Nexus Institute.

“The Nexus Institute has performed sterling work responding to the needs of adults who have experienced sexual abuse, violence or rape,” Ms. Anderson said.

“It works across a huge geographical area – comprising Enniskillen, Omagh, Derry Strabane and Limavady - but I became aware in March that Nexus was facing severe financial pressures due to the removal of funding under the prevention of sexual violence strategy.

“I raised this immediately with the Western Health and Social Care Trust and I am pleased to say that substantial additional funding has now been secured for Nexus.

“We are still some way short of the funds that Nexus require but this is a welcome step and the Western Local Commissioning Group have informed me that they will continue to work closely with the Trust to consider a number of ways to address the remaining shortfall.” ENDS
